Can You Juice Onions?

In ancient times, the onion was considered a symbol of eternal life. Today, new research shows that it can improve health and even add a delicious zip to juices. Read on to learn more. Besides adding a delicious zip to juices, onions are a great source of organosulfides and other beneficial compounds.

Organosulfides

Organosulfides are secondary metabolites found in onions. The process of steam distilling onions and removing the pungent oil from onions results in large quantities of byproducts, including organosulfides. Onion oil can be tested to determine whether or not it contains organosulfides.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a phytonutrient that is found in many fruits and vegetables. Quercetin acts as an antioxidant and may reduce the risk of cancer and cardiovascular disease. It is also thought to help with bladder infections and promote prostate health.

Vitamin C

Raw or juiced onions are rich in Vitamin C, and they have numerous health benefits. In fact, one cup of boiled onions contains eleven milligrams of the vitamin. This is approximately 15 percent of the recommended daily allowance for men and women. Vitamin C helps boost collagen production, which is essential for bone and blood vessel health. Additionally, it supports mental health by boosting production of norepinephrine, an amino acid that regulates mood.

Antioxidants

Juiced onions contain the antioxidant quercetin, which helps lower the risk of allergic reactions and chronic inflammatory diseases. It works by scavenging free radicals and helping the body get rid of histamine.

Fibrinolytic properties

Onions have been shown to have antithrombotic properties. This study evaluated the effects of several varieties on blood clots. Toyohira onion showed significant antithrombotic and thrombolytic activity. Moreover, this vegetable also had an antiplatelet effect. In contrast, 2935A and K83211 onion varieties showed only thrombolytic activity. Interestingly, quercetin was not found to affect antithrombotic activity of onions. Therefore, future studies in populations should also consider the antithrombotic effect of vegetables.

Sleep disorders

Onion juice may be a great sleep aid for those suffering from sleep disorders. Its high concentration of L-tryptophan (a natural amino acid) can help induce a deep sleep. Its calming properties can also help with stress levels and promote healthy sleeping patterns. Furthermore, onion juice is packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Blood sugar control

Blood sugar control is one of the key concerns for diabetics, and juicing onions may help. In a recent study, researchers found that juicing onions helps to lower blood sugar levels. This result comes as good news for diabetics!
